Overview

USCF certifies Tournament Directors (TDs) at multiple levels, each allowing progressively more complex events to be directed. Higher levels require more experience, training, and demonstrated competency. The system is designed so that new TDs start with smaller events and grow their credentials over time.

Official source note: USCF TD certification requirements, levels, and procedures are updated periodically. The descriptions below reflect the general structure as commonly understood. Always verify current requirements at uschess.org — specifically the TD certification section under the “Organizers” or “Membership” area.

The USCF TD Certification Levels

Club TD

The entry-level certification. A Club TD can direct USCF-rated events at their own chess club or for a specific sponsoring organization.

Typical requirements:

  • Pass the USCF TD exam (online exam covering basic rules and procedures)
  • Be a current USCF member
  • Be sponsored by a USCF-affiliated club or affiliate

A Club TD is sufficient to run scholastic club events, after-school programs, and small local events. This is the level most parent volunteers and coaches start at.

Local TD

A step above Club TD. A Local TD can direct a wider range of USCF-rated events, including open tournaments open to the general public.

Typical requirements:

  • Hold a Club TD certification
  • Direct a minimum number of events
  • Pass additional examination requirements (or demonstrate experience)

Senior TD

Senior TDs can direct major regional events, large open tournaments, and state championships. They often serve as chief TD at events where Club and Local TDs assist.

Typical requirements:

  • Hold a Local TD certification
  • Significant event directing experience (multiple years, many events)
  • Additional examination or experience requirements
  • Demonstrated competency in complex situations (appeals, tie-breaks, large Swiss systems)

National TD

The highest USCF TD certification level. National TDs can direct any USCF-rated event, including national championships.

Typical requirements:

  • Hold a Senior TD certification
  • Extensive experience directing major events
  • Demonstrated expertise across all areas of USCF rules and procedures
  • Typically involves peer review and USCF approval

Which Level Do You Need?

For a chess parent or coach wanting to run scholastic club events or small local tournaments: Club TD is the appropriate starting level and is achievable with reasonable effort.

For running larger open tournaments or state events: Local TD or Senior TD depending on the event size and complexity.

How Levels Are Maintained

USCF TD certifications may require periodic renewal — active directing and continuing education can be part of maintaining status. Check uschess.org for current renewal requirements.
