Print this checklist and go through it the morning of every tournament. Tape it inside your chess bag.
The Night Before
- Chess clock charged or batteries checked
- Scoresheets and pencils packed
- USCF membership card or confirmation email located
- Entry confirmation found
- Uniform or comfortable clothing set out
- Directions to venue confirmed
- Departure time set (arrive at least 30 minutes early)
- Snacks and water bottle prepared
Morning of the Tournament — Before Leaving
- Chess clock
- Scoresheets
- Pencil + spare pencil
- USCF membership card / confirmation
- Water bottle (filled)
- Snacks (light — granola bar, fruit, crackers, nuts)
- Sweater or jacket
- Phone (fully charged)
- Cash (entry, snacks, parking)
- Charger or power bank
- Small chess set (optional — for between-round review)
- Any medication needed for the day
At the Venue — On Arrival
- Check in at registration
- Confirm section and player number
- Locate pairings board
- Locate restrooms
- Confirm where parents should wait
- Set clock to correct time control
- Know what round starts when
Before Each Round
- Check pairings — board number and color (White or Black)
- Use the restroom
- Drink water
- Sit down early
- Confirm clock is set
- Take a breath before the game begins
After the Last Round
- Confirm result is posted correctly
- Collect any belongings from the board
- Attend awards ceremony if applicable
- Check out with TD if required
